The Client: PortPay: making marinas more efficient
PortPay makes marinas and port facilities more efficient and profitable. The system consists of hardware components, a web application, and a mobile app. Ports can use the system to manage water traffic, improve operational efficiency, enhance security, and introduce new monetisation options.
The Challenge: Continuous development without fixed-scope contracts
Tunga had developed several frontend projects for PortPay. Until recently, projects were scoped as they came in, often with tight deadlines. The challenge was to create a collaboration model that would give the client maximum flexibility and cost control while enabling Tunga to ensure quality and move forward quickly once projects were approved.
The Solution: Monthly retainer with a dedicated project manager
In July 2020, Tunga started working with a monthly retainer to streamline the workflow. The advantage: no time lost with formal approval rounds. Tunga's project manager Elijah Atuhaire from Uganda works dedicated for PortPay — managing the developers, handling planning, and owning the backlog.
- Together with PortPay, create a backlog and prioritise it before each sprint
- PortPay marks which projects/features to add; they are estimated jointly with Tunga
- PortPay makes the final decision on which items to work on each sprint
- PortPay receives a status report every four weeks covering hours spent and items delivered
